You read that right. I can now die.
Most of my life I have been an unenthused baker. I baked a birthday cake for a kid or two and then baked the same two sheet cakes every time. But that’s about it. I wasn’t going to win a prize for the most beautiful cake, ever, and really didn’t give a hoot to change my cake game.
A Seed Was Planted
Several years back I worked as a Registered Nurse and one of my co-workers vowed that for one year she would share her love and bake a cake for every single staff birthday.
She had taken a class on how to decorate cakes. I thought huh, that was interesting, but never gave a hoot to change my cake game and besides, I only ate cake on rare occasions, those kids are grown up and they turned out ok without a pretty cake.
Well, this past year, I wrote a few cookbooks to give as wedding gifts. It was really fun and I am now working on cookbook number five. Now, I gave a hoot to see Grandma’s cake in a lasting photo and I remembered being semi-inspired by my friend.
So, I got to work and I baked Grandma Colleen’s three-layer carrot cake. After watching YouTube. I ordered “cake baking stuff” that I don’t really “need” and I made that damn cake look pretty nice.
So from that point on, my life was complete, bucket list checked off.
My New Quandry
Now I don’t want to bake ugly cakes.
In the meanwhile, waiting to begin Bake From Scratch‘s free classes to begin in January of 2020. I noticed this recipe for Red Velvet Bundt Cake and I had recently inherited a swanky bundt pan. Plus, my friend had a December birthday and I wanted to bake him a cake. It turned out o.k. but suddenly my cake self-esteem dropped.
I thought the cake was a bit too dense. Is this normal for a bundt cake? Did I overbeat the batter? Did I use the wrong size of a bundt pan?
These are cake questions that I now ponder. In the end, my friend knew that I gave a hoot about his birthday and my life had already been made cake complete, anything else is simply a bonus.
Why this post? I plan to post on my success or failure as I take one baking class each month of 2020.
